Our African Safari
Wow – what an amazing trip we’ve just been on – this time visiting Kenya and the tea fields at Nandi Hills. We were charmed by this fantastically diverse country.
We flew into the capital Nairobi, with its crowded streets, huge advertising hoardings and rubbish tips, where we could hardly move for people and traffic. A turbulent city, we spent an hour travelling the very short distance to our hotel!
As we were in Nairobi for a couple of days, we took the opportunity of visiting the Langata Giraffe Centre run by the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife where they have the rare Rothschilds giraffe. We were able to hand feed and stroke a giraffe as the raised viewing platform was at giraffe head height! It was wonderful to see their beautiful eyes and lashes and huge tongues! Some of the more adventurous onlookers even put feed pellets in their own mouths and let the giraffe lick them off – yuk!!
We also visited the Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, focal point for elephant conservation, where elephant babies orphaned by poaching are brought in from all over the country. They literally receive personal care 24 hours a day and the dedicated handlers even sleep in their pens at night to keep them company!
What an amazing start to our trip!
