There are few more striking symbols of Africa than the acacia tree with its gnarled branches, graceful form and jagged thorns, and one of the fun things we did on our trip was Acacia spotting. We wanted to find a similar shape to our logo – which is like looking for a needle in a haystack – but I think we got pretty close with this one!
The umbrella-shaped crowns enable Acacias to capture the maximum amount of sunlight with the smallest number of leaves and the non-Australian species tend to be thorny. That doesn’t stop giraffes who manage to munch their way through up to 30 kilos of leaves and twigs a day.
These amazing trees are vital to the health of the bush and provide food and shelter for many animals and insects.
